Fall camp is a week and change in, and the picture of this Florida State team is finally starting to take some real shape. Tuesday night's first scrimmage inside Doak Campbell was a 70-to-80-play look at where the roster actually is, followed by a trip down to Jacksonville for a weekend of practice at UNF that this program uses as a real-world test of camp before the second scrimmage back in Tallahassee on Sunday. There is a lot to sort through. Here's what stood out.
Start with Ashton Daniels. Mike Norvell has been careful with his quarterback comments this offseason, and the language coming out of Tuesday was noticeably warmer than anything we heard in the spring. "You can just feel that command," is how Norvell put it, along with a specific note about Daniels making really nice throws on third down. That's the tell. A veteran head coach is not going to volunteer the phrase "you can feel the command" about a first-year starter unless he means it. Six practices in, Daniels is looking like the quarterback this staff bet on when they pulled him out of the portal.
The other quarterback moment worth flagging is Kevin Sperry hitting Jasen Lopez on a vertical shot. Sperry is a redshirt freshman, Lopez is a true freshman receiver, and the two of them connecting on a chunk play tells you the coaching staff is trusting the younger arms with real installs during scrimmage reps. Malachi Marshall has been sidelined by injury, which puts more of a spotlight on Sperry as the third arm in the room. If he stays sharp, that's a real luxury on the depth chart.
On offense the other names that came out clean were Micahi Danzy, who scored a touchdown and continues to build on a strong close to last season, and Ousmane Kromah, who is emerging as the lead back in a running back room that also includes Samuel Singleton Jr. Tim Harris Jr. praised Kromah's yards-after-contact focus specifically, and if that's real, it changes the way this offense can lean on the run in short-yardage situations against Alabama and Miami later in the year.
Defensively, the most-talked-about name is Ashlynd Barker. The safety has been the story of camp so far, and Tony White singled him out again after the scrimmage. In the same conversation White highlighted a K.J. Kirkland interception and productive scrimmage days from A.J. Cottrill and Karon Maycock at linebacker. Up front the interior of the defensive line is getting mentioned by name in every recap, with Daniel Lyons, Deante McCray, Jordan Sanders, Franklin Whitley, and Kevin Wynn all cited. The Desir brothers, Darryll and Mandrell, are drawing praise as expected. Edge production is coming from Rylan Kennedy and Jalen Anderson.
White's own quote from film review is the one to hang onto. "I went home and I was pissed off," he said, before adding that after watching the tape he decided the group was right where they needed to be. He also said, memorably, "You can see the thinking's turning into instinct." That's the year-two jump we've been writing about for months. If that language holds through the second scrimmage on Sunday, this defense is going to be a problem for people in September.
The Jacksonville trip is a Mike Norvell tradition at this point. The Seminoles head to the UNF campus in early August every year for a couple of practice days away from the Tallahassee facility, and the coaching staff has been open about why. New environment, different fields, different weight room, different meal schedule. It's meant to be a small dose of the road-game disruption a team will feel in September when they land in Tuscaloosa or Louisville. The trip usually gets described in vague terms because the practices are closed, but the pattern of the last three years has been that the offense tends to come out of the Jacksonville weekend playing faster. That's the thing to watch when the second scrimmage starts on Sunday.
Two other health notes worth tracking. Wide receiver Jayvan Boggs and linebacker Mikai Gbayor are still working back toward full participation. Both are expected to be full-go for the opener, but their absence from full-speed scrimmage reps is why some of the younger players are getting the highlights right now. Cam Brooks on the defensive line is expected back this season but will be limited early. Everything else on the injury front has been quiet, which at this point in an FSU camp is its own kind of good news.
